A zero-carbon private house with a dramatic earth-sheltered design — solar panels, airtight envelope and mechanical heat recovery achieving Code Level 6.
Lea Gate House is a new three-storey private house in Bramley, completed with a new barn and outdoor swimming pool. CD International provided full-stages MEP design, thermal modelling and site supervision throughout the construction stage.
The environmental design was developed specifically to reduce carbon footprint and lower running costs — aiming for Code Level 6, a zero-carbon emission building. The flat roof over the first-floor block was dedicated to solar panels to capture solar energy for heating. Skylights were positioned on the roof to bring natural light to the core of the building across both ground and first floors.
The building envelope is designed to be fully airtight to minimise warm or cool air passage through the structure. Background ventilation is provided by a zoned mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery before discharging air externally.
